We were asked by a major Sugar Mill Company on the North Coast of Kwazulu Natal to assist them in getting their Compressed Air units up to standard. We assessed the equipment and found one of their 250 Kw Atlas Copco units were seized and needed repairs.
We transported the unit to our head office in Johannesburg and did a full internal assessment of the Air end (screw side) in our workshop. We found that the unit seized on the compression side, and preparations were done to get the unit ready for machining.
All the relevant components were machined, and they underwent stringent measures to ensure that the sizes were all in spec. We fitted a major overhaul kit end and assembled the air end.
Our technician proceeded to site where he assembled the unit and after doing a major service the Compressor was commissioned successfully.
Prevention
In order to prevent such repairs, the end user must make sure that their units are inspected for defects on a regular basis and that all services are kept up to date, services and inspections are a small price to pay in order to avoid these highly expensive repairs.
